![]() The Kwikset Obsidian with Home Connect is a keycode, deadbolt lock with a smart, minimalist keypad that lights up on touch. You’ll never forget your keys with this lock, because there aren’t any. While all had some redeeming qualities, there were other aspects that held them back, be it limited functionality or a feature that didn't work as well as we would have liked. We found the smart locks listed below to be good, but not quite up to the same level as the locks in the first section. Read our full Level Lock Touch Edition review. And, the Level Lock can be connected to Alexa or Apple's HomeKit - provided you link this Bluetooth smart lock to one of the best smart home hubs. In practice, it was a little on the slow side, but it was fairly convenient to use. Not only can you use an app on your phone to open the Touch edition, but you can also use a key fob or NFC card.īut, the neatest trick is that you can simply tap the lock with your finger to open your door (provided your phone is in range). ![]() While it doesn't disappear inside your door like the Level Bolt, the Level Lock Touch Edition takes an equally minimalist approach, so no one can tell just by looking that you have a smart lock on your door. There's also the Kwikset Halo Touch ( $249 at Amazon (opens in new tab)), which has a fingerprint reader in lieu of a keypad it comes in two finishes and designs, and connects directly to your Wi-Fi. You can also get it with a touchscreen or with a physical, backlit keypad the latter is less expensive by about $50. Plus, this lock connects directly to your Wi-Fi network, is compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant, and has some good theft-deterrent features built into its touchscreen. The Kwikset Halo is available in four finishes (Iron Black, Polished Chrome, Satin Nickel, and Venetian Bronze). That's why we like the Kwikset Halo it has a rekeyable lock, which was dead simple to use. But, if you have a rental property, this can be an issue if you're worried that someone has made a bunch of copies. While smart locks make it easy to unlock and lock your door using a smartphone or keypad, sometimes you just want a plain old key. SmartScreen security feature isn't obvious to novice users Also, there's no brass finish option this time around, but that's more of a quibble than anything. It's an extra step, and one that visitors might not understand. Our biggest gripe is that you have to press the Yale logo before you can input the keycode. If the battery runs out, you can give it a temporary boost by touching a 9v battery to two contacts underneath the keypad. There is no manual key option, though: it’s a keycode (unlimited!), app or nothing. Like its predecessor, the Assure SL, the Assure Lock 2 is an attractive, well-designed lock that is easy to install. However, you need to swap out an internal module if you want to switch from Bluetooth to, say Wi-Fi or Zigbee. That means you can control it from your smartphone, whether you have one of the best iPhones or best Android phones, or a smart speaker like the Amazon Echo, Google Nest Mini or Google Nest Hub Max. ![]() It works with Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit and SmartThings, and will also support Matter in 2023. The support for multiple smart home standards make the Yale Assure Lock 2 one of the best smart locks available. ![]() The only thing missing is support for Apple HomeKit. That module can handle multiple locks, so it’s a great low-cost pick for adding remote control to several doors at once. Note that you will also need the August Connect module (about $60, sold separately) if you want to control and monitor the lock remotely. And, when you move out, you can quickly and easily remove the lock and replace it with the old one, keeping your deposit safe. There’s no need to replace the cylinder it will continue to work with your existing keys, keeping your landlord happy. If you rent your home, the August Smart Lock is the best smart lock, as it’s very simple to install on top of an extant deadlock without replacing the cylinder or key. You can pick up this smart, full-featured lock for less than $100. If you want to add some smarts to your home without spending too much, the August Smart Lock has most of the features you'll need, at a reasonable price.

Software to Set Up Our Game ControllerĪlthough we’d expect games to have controller support built-in, this isn’t the case with most titles. We’ll be using one of my favourite games - Portal This means that since they have to work with a PS3 or Xbox 360, they’ll work for the purposes of this tutorial. Tip: Whilst I recommend the officially licensed PS3 or Xbox 360 controllers, you can also use controllers manufactured by 3rd parties as long as they’re certified for use with either console. Microsoft does manufacture a wireless receiver that can also work to allow a wireless controller be connected but the cost of this tends to be more than the cost of a new, wired controller so I wouldn’t recommend it for anything other than serious gaming!įor the purposes of this tutorial I’ll be using a USB PlayStation 3 controller but I will also explain how to install an Xbox 360 controller too. You will require an additional driver developed by Colin Munro at that, although not officially licensed, works very well and even allows support for the built-in force feedback on compatible games. Setting up an Xbox 360 wired controller with your Mac isn’t as straightforward as the PS3 controller but is still very easy to do. However, Microsoft (and officially licensed 3rd party companies) sell a wide range of USB wired controllers for the Xbox 360. Unlike the PS3 controller, the Xbox 360 controllers don’t operate over Bluetooth and instead use their own proprietary radio communication. The Xbox 360 controller is a little more involved to set up but is preferred by many gamers to the PS3 controller However, pairing it via Bluetooth is a little more involved but only takes a few moments. If you’re wanting to use the controller via USB then there’s nothing further you need to do. Simply plug the controller into your Mac’s USB port or pair it via Bluetooth and it’s ready to customise. Amazingly, it requires no installation due to the standards it uses for both of these. The PS3 controller works via both Bluetooth and USB. The PS3 controller is a popular choice due to its iconic form factor and ease of setting up However, I’m going to save you the hassle of this and recommend two different controller types, the PS3 and the Xbox 360. There’s a few things that we’ll need before we can start playing games on our Mac using a controller.Īll game controllers are not created equal so it makes it much easier in the long run to do some research about the best game controller to purchase. Whilst PC gamers will argue that nothing beats the precision of a keyboard and mouse (which is true), there are a lot of people who just like to use a game controller - and I’m one of them! Together, these studies are beginning to uncover the similarities and differences in how chaperones use weak interactions to guide protein folding. For example, Spy releases clients in a largely folded state, while clients seem to be unfolded upon release from Trigger Factor or DnaK. However, there are also key differences, especially in the details of how the chaperones release clients and how ATP cycling impacts that process. Thus, the relatively weak affinity of these interactions seems to provide directionality to the folding process. One striking similarity is that the chaperones all bind weakly to their clients, such that the chaperone–client interactions are readily outcompeted by stronger, intra- and intermolecular contacts in the folded state. Here, we review examples from four distinct chaperones, Spy, Trigger Factor, DnaK, and HscA-HscB, highlighting the similarities and differences between their mechanisms. For the first time, recent advances in NMR spectroscopy have enabled detailed studies of how unfolded, “client” proteins interact with both ATP-dependent and ATP-independent classes of chaperones. Despite the central importance of this process to protein homeostasis, it has not been clear exactly how chaperones guide this process or whether the diverse families of chaperones use similar mechanisms. ![]() The major classes of molecular chaperones have highly variable sequences, sizes, and shapes, yet they all bind to unfolded proteins, limit their aggregation, and assist in their folding.
